Has anyone here experimented with ultra-light alternatives to traditional microspikes or crampons specifically for sections like the early season snow patches on the Icicle Ridge Trail? I did a section hike last weekend and realized the classic microspikes felt like overkill in some of the patchier spots-especially on the exposed switchbacks where traction’s only an occasional need.
Has anyone tried DIY rubber band/mini cleat setups, or lighter running spikes for short snow crossings? Did those hold up, or is there a safety drawback I’m missing? Also, how are you packing them for quick access when snow patches are intermittent?
Would love to hear any hacks or combo systems people are using, especially if you’re balancing weight and safety for trails like this-seems like Icicle Ridge is a great test case with so many mixed-condition miles!
