I’ve got a pair of the Newton Ridge Plus II that I’ve logged about 200 miles on over two seasons, mostly in the PNW mud and roots you described. Fit-wise, they run true to size but a tad narrow in the heel-my narrow heels lock in fine, but the wide version adds real forefoot room without ballooning the volume. For sweat, they breathe okay up to 70°F but get steamy in humidity; thin merino wool socks like Darn Tough help wick without compromising the Omni-Tech membrane.
Traction is solid on wet roots and clay, but slick rocks can be iffy-Omni-Grip holds better than expected in cold (down to 30°F) without hardening much. Durability’s been great; no peeling on the PU leather after reproofing with Nikwax Tub All, which didn’t gum up the coating. Waterproofing lasted a full wet season for me, and the gusseted tongue handles splashes well up to ankle-deep.
For support, they’re stiff enough for your 20-25 lb loads on day hikes or light overnights, but lace them double-X style to cinch the heel and prevent slip on downs. They pair fine with Kahtoola microspikes (hooks align okay), and swapping to Superfeet Green insoles boosted comfort big time. On the combo front, I rotate to Altra Lone Peaks for dry runs and keep these for wet-saves cash and covers bases without overlap issues. Solid choice for a first boot!
