Totally agree on the practical side for multi-day hauls-I’ve been using the Helio for about three seasons now on CDT segments and some Cascades loops, and the real win beyond pressure is how it integrates with water treatment. With that targeted spray, you can pair it efficiently with a Sawyer Squeeze or similar filter right after; no more wasting treated water on inefficient dribbles from a hanging bag. On conservation, my logs show closer to 15-25% savings overall, but it shines when you’re rationing from a single cache-shorter rinse times mean less evaporation loss in hot weather too.
One thing not mentioned: the pump’s silicone diaphragm does need occasional rinsing to avoid mineral buildup from hard water sources, which could cut pressure over time if ignored. A quick vinegar soak every few uses keeps it humming. Sustainability-wise, Nemo’s using recycled plastics in the bladder (about 50% post-consumer), and it’s PVC-free, which beats a lot of cheap imports that leach junk. But yeah, the pump isn’t bombproof-I’ve reinforced the base with some gorilla tape after a rocky slip, and it lasted another year. For true ultralight purists, a DIY gravity siphon with a trash compactor bag is still king at under 2 oz, but if you’re doing 10+ day pushes where hygiene affects morale, the Helio’s efficiency pays off without much added bulk. Curious if anyone’s modded it for even lighter carry?
