Hey everyone, I’m pretty new to backpacking and just starting to gear up for some longer trips. I’ve been looking at portable cots to make sleeping off the ground easier, especially since I have some back issues, but I’m totally confused about “XL” sizes. Do they mean extra long for taller folks, or extra wide for more comfort? Like, would an XL cot fit better in a standard two-person tent, or is it overkill for solo hiking? Any recommendations on lightweight XL options under 5 lbs that pack small? I’d love if you could break it down for me-thanks!

XL on cots is almost always extra long (78-82″) for tall folks like 6′4″+-widths hover around 25-30″ either way, so not a ton more comfy unless specified. It’ll squeeze into some 2P tents diagonally (check floor dims like 90×50″), but solo? Go 3P or tarp it to avoid cot-tent wrestling matches.

Thanks for the tips! I’m 6′1″ and eyeing the Helinox XL-anyone used it with a Therm-a-Rest pad on top? Does it stay stable on uneven ground? Total noob here.

I’ve logged 500+ miles on the Helinox XL-legs are bomber on roots/rocks, but they do sink in sand/mud without add-on feet (cheap fix on Amazon). NeoAir XL holds via tension straps (Helinox sells ’em), but my Nemo Tensor grips better without. Cots save backs short-term, but long-haul? Air pad + hip belt tension wins for me. Who’s with me?

Air pad + hip belt works for light backs, but 700mi on Helinox XL (with disc issues) = zero pain vs pads’ daily grief. Got data? Cots ftw long-term IMO. Who’s switched back?
