Hi everyone, I’m super new to hiking and just starting to dip my toes into mountaineering stuff because some trails around here get pretty steep and icy in winter. I’ve seen a ton of used gear for sale online and at local shops-crampons, ice axes, harnesses, helmets, even ropes-and it seems like a great way to save money since new stuff is crazy expensive. But I’m totally confused about what’s safe to buy used and what I should avoid.
Like, can you really trust a used harness or rope? How do you even check if they’ve been damaged from a fall or worn out? And what about crampons or ice axes-do they get dull or bent in ways that are hard to spot? I’ve read mixed things about certifications and expiration dates, but it doesn’t make sense to me yet. Would love if some experienced folks could break it down, maybe with tips on what to inspect or questions to ask sellers. Pictures or stories from your own used gear buys would be awesome too! Thanks a bunch! 😊
