Collar design beats marketing specs
Twist locks look clean on the shelf but collect grit that turns them into one-way ratchets. Lever locks survive mud better yet add bulk that catches on pack straps when you swing them behind your shoulder. Carry both styles on a test hike over loose scree and count how many times you have to stop to reset length. The one that forces extra stops is the wrong choice for that route.
Tip choice changes ground feel
Rubber caps muffle vibration on pavement but skate on wet rock. The carbide tip underneath bites granite yet chews through wooden boardwalks. Swap tips at the trailhead rather than carrying spares that rattle in your pack. On volcanic ash or fine sand, a small basket stops the pole from punching through; without it you lose propulsion on every step.
Strap geometry matters more than weight
Most straps sit too far forward so your wrist bears load instead of your forearm. After six hours that creates hot spots on the ulnar side. Cut and re-sew the webbing so the strap crosses the back of the hand at a 30-degree angle. The fix takes ten minutes and removes the need for padded grips that add grams you never notice until you climb with them.
Length rules change with load
When you carry a full pack the correct pole length drops because your torso angle shifts forward. Mark two settings on the shaft with tape: one for day hikes, one for loaded carries. Ignore the height charts that assume an upright posture. Test both on the same descent and notice how the shorter setting keeps elbows at 90 degrees instead of locking out.
Edge case: river crossings
Poles become liabilities when you need both hands free for a pack. Slide them under the pack’s compression straps rather than strapping them to the side where they snag on brush. The move keeps them accessible for the next climb without adding swing weight.
Maintenance that actually prevents failure
Clean the lower shaft and collar threads after every trip that involves stream crossings. A single grain of sand inside the mechanism turns a five-second adjustment into a two-minute fight. Carry a small brush in the same pocket as your map and use it while the pole is still wet. That habit extends service life far more than any expensive alloy.
