That weight stays useful only if the stove stays stable on uneven ground and lights reliably after days of dust and moisture.
Matching stove to trip length and group size
A single-burner screw-on model works for solo or two-person trips of three to five days. Larger groups or longer routes shift the choice toward a remote-canister stove with a wider base. The remote setup adds 50 to 80 grams but keeps the flame farther from the canister, which matters once temperatures drop below freezing and liquid fuel inside the canister stops flowing. On trips under two nights, the lighter integrated canister version saves enough pack weight to justify the trade-off.
Wind performance and simmer control
Most companion gas stoves lose efficiency above 15 km/h winds unless you add a foil or titanium windscreen. A screen that wraps three-quarters around the pot can cut fuel use by roughly a third in breezy conditions. Simmer control varies by valve design; stoves with a separate low-flame setting maintain a steady boil at low output, which prevents scorching dehydrated meals. Models without that separate setting often require constant adjustment and waste gas when you need gentle heat for hours.
Fuel planning and canister choice
Calculate fuel needs from the stove’s stated burn time rather than guesses. A typical 100-gram canister lasts about 45 to 60 minutes at full output on most screw-on stoves. Carry one extra canister for every three days when melting snow or cooking for more than two people. Store canisters upright and above freezing when possible; cold canisters that feel light still contain liquid fuel that will not vaporize until warmed against your body for a few minutes.
Setup routine that prevents most failures
Assemble the stove on flat rock or packed snow, not soft dirt that shifts under the pot. Tighten the canister by hand until it stops, then give one extra quarter turn with a multi-tool. Test the seal with a quick hiss check before striking the lighter. Keep the flame low while the pot settles to avoid tipping. After each meal, wipe the burner jets with a dry cloth to remove food residue that clogs orifices over repeated use.
When to switch away from gas
Gas stoves lose their edge once you need more than five days of fuel or travel above 4000 meters where canisters become hard to source. In those conditions a liquid-fuel stove or alcohol stove becomes the practical replacement. For everything shorter and lower, a well-maintained companion gas stove remains the simplest option that still lets you cook real meals without extra complexity.
